Upshur County Profile

The four-lane highway (US Rt.33 - Robert C. Byrd Highway) splits Upshur County. The four lane highway connects to I-79 approximately twelve (12) miles west of Buckhannon. On the east, the four-lane to Elkins is complete. Plans to complete the Robert C. Byrd Highway to I-81 in Virginia are completed and construction should begin soon. Railroad tracks serve a large portion of the county.
The four-lane highway, airport and railroad networks place Buckhannon-Upshur County in an excellent position to attract major industry. Overnight trucking services can reach over 50% of the United States population. The water and sewage system currently has a utilization factor of 50%. The excess water and sewage capacity is an excellent drawing card for the Upshur County area.
The new airfield with a runway 75 feet wide, 3500 feet long with a 1500 foot turn around area opened May 23, 1998. We have fifteen (15) acres available on the new airfield site. Plans include purchasing an additional ninety (90) acres that joins the airfield and extending the runway to 6500 feet. Near the airfield, we have an additional five hundred (500) acres for commercial and industrial use.
The following assets are available and should be attractive to new business considering a West Virginia location.

•     Over two thousand (2000) acres are available for commercial and industrial use. Sites are available varying from 2.5 acres to 300 acres. All have water, sewage and railroad on the property or near by. All commercial sites are located near the four-lane highway. Distance varies from zero to ten miles. Three-phase electricity is available on or near these sites.

•     Two universities and five colleges are within a 20 to 60 minute drive. West Virginia Wesleyan College is located in Buckhannon.

•     Buckhannon has one local, general hospital, and the WVU Medical Center is within a one hour drive. Veteran's Administration Hospital is a 35 minute drive and five other general hospitals are within a 20 to 45 minute drive.

•     Several thousand square feet of building spaces are available in our building bank.

•     No Business and Occupation tax

•     The Development Authority owns a three hundred (300) acre industrial park. It is on the state four lane with a railroad and a river. Water, sewage and an electrical substation are on the site.

•     In 1995 Trus Joist MacMillan constructed two engineered wood product plants at a cost of 100 million dollars, in the park.
